How to I prep my armchair before class?

  1. Label each fabric panel. Use a marker to write the name of each piece of fabric. Include a directional arrow pointing in an upwards direction.
  2. Measure each fabric panel. Use a  dressmakers tape  to measure the width and height of each piece of fabric. Add 2cm to each sewn edge. Add 5cm to each stapled edge.
  3. Create a  cutting plan . Plot out the fabric pieces onto a grid to determine the amount of fabric to buy.  Download a free copy here . Round up to nearest half meter. Add 10% extra for patterns or large stripes. Ensure the directional arrows are all going in the same direction.
  4. Remove arms/legs. Do this only if they are meant to be removed &/or if fabric is under them. It is helpful to number the feet so they are put back into the same place.
  5. Remove the fabric. Start taking off the last thing the previous upholsterer would have done. Usually this is the bottom dustcover. Take lots of photos during this step. Useful tools are:  screwdriver  or  tack/staple removers pliers scissors hammer or mallet.
  6. Save fabric panels. Each time you remove a fabric panel, keep aside and bring to class. In some cases we can use these for pattern cutting.
  7. Remove unusable layers. Any foam, wadding, stuffings, lining that cannot be reused careful remove and dispose of them. Take lots of photos of each layer so you can replicate it in class.
  8. Remove the cushion cover. After removing the cover, use a  thread ripper  to unpick it. Your zipper can be replaced in class.
  9. Bring to class: Your chair, old fabric panels, reusable foam, feet/legs, new fabric and cutting plan.

What is a shanked button?

A shanked button has a plastic or metal loop on the back for tying with twine or cotton.

These types of buttons come in two types, ready-to-use or self-covering. Self-covering buttons mostly used in upholstery work.

Do I need to bring my own tools?

Each student will have use of a work-station and tools for your class. This includes items such as a stapler, scissors, needles, etc. If you wish to bring tools such as your own fabric scissors etc, make sure they are easily identifiable.

How many buttons can I add to my headboard?

Most headboard in our classes have between 6-10 buttons, depending on the size of the headboard. If you are using self-covered buttons (ie: buttons that you cover in fabric) please cover them before class if possible.

In which order should I take your upholstery classes?

The ideal order to take classes are as follows:

  1. P1 Beginners footstool (6 hour)
  2. Headboard (6 hour)
  3. P2 Beginners tall stool (6 hour)
  4. 2-day chair workshop (12 hour)
  5. Diamond tufting workshop (6 hour)
  6. 1-day upholstery (6 hour)

NOTES:

Only the P1 Beginners and Headboard workshops are taught at our satellite locations, the other classes are at Mollies HQ in Papakura, Auckland.

The P1 and P2 Beginners workshops have been designed to teach a certain curriculum of essential upholstery techniques in a compact time frame. Think of these as a kick-starter programme.

The 1-day upholstery workshop is like an open upholstery day for existing students. They are held on the same weekend as the 2-day chair workshop, and is great for students who want to continue up-skilling, or who do not have the space or tools at home to work on their own projects.
