When it comes to painting terracotta plant pots, there is a secret technique that ensures a long-lasting and durable finish. By using a diluted mixture of Vintage Paint and water for the first coat, you can create a self-priming effect that deeply penetrates into the porous terracotta surface. This step is crucial as it prevents the paint from peeling off or fading over time, ensuring that your painted pots retain their vibrant colors for seasons to come.

Here's a detailed breakdown of how to achieve the best results:

  1. Before starting the painting process, ensure that your terracotta pots are clean and free from any dust, dirt, or debris. You can gently wash them with mild soap and water, and allow them to dry completely.

  2. To create the self-priming mixture, combine 1 part Vintage Paint with 1 part water (for example 1/4 cup paint + 1/4 cup water).

  3. Using a brush or sponge, apply the diluted Vintage Paint mixture onto the terracotta pot in even strokes. The diluted paint will easily seep into the porous surface of the terracotta, ensuring better adhesion and preventing future peeling or flaking.

  4. After the first coat has dried, paint with undiluted Vintage Paint. The subsequent coats will provide coverage and intensify the colour.

By following this technique of using a diluted mix of Vintage Paint and water for the first coat, you can ensure that your painted terracotta pots retain their beauty and charm over an extended period. Enjoy the process of transforming your pots into personalised masterpieces that will bring joy and color to your garden or indoor space.
