Creating a Raised Design with Leather Inserts
Creating a Raised Design with Leather Inserts
Before diving into the process, let's understand the materials involved:
- Outside Leather: Veg tanned leather will be used for the finished, visible part of your design. It is known for its ability to hold a shape for wet moulding. We'll use it for the outer layers of our project, providing a smooth, finished look.
- Insert Leather: Split veg tanned leather is an economical grain free leather perfect for inserts, mockups and practicing.
Let's create a simple raised design, like a name or logo. You can adapt this process to create more complex designs.
Step 1: Design and Cutting
1. Sketch your design on paper. Keep it simple for your first attempt.
2. Transfer the design onto the split veg-tan leather using a pencil.
3. Carefully cut out your design using a craft knife. Ensure clean, precise cuts are made.
Tip: Layer the leather for more 3D look, using leather glue to adhere them together.
Step 2: Preparing the Finishing Leather
1. Cut the finishing veg-tan leather, ensuring it is slightly larger than required.
2. Wet your finishing leather and position it over the cut-out design. A modelling tool or bone creaser can help smooth the leather over the shape.
3. Allow to dry.
Step 4: Stitching or Glueing (Optional)
Remove the insert and either glue together or add a backing layer and stitch around the perimeter of the design.
Tips for Success
Use a sharp blade when cutting leather to avoid jagged edges.Allow adequate drying time before handling or working on the project further.
Practice on scrap pieces before working on your final project!
