Just like a building, an upholstered chair needs a strong foundation. This foundation isn't just about making the chair look good; it’s what supports the stuffing, fabric, and ultimately, the person sitting on it.
Most chairs use either elastic or jute webbing as their support base, but other materials like wood, strapping, metal, or even plastic can also be used.
When reupholstering, it’s usually best to replace like with like. If your chair has elastic webbing and foam, stick with that. If it has springs, keep those. However, if you’re thinking of swapping out jute webbing and springs for elastic webbing and foam, there are a few things to consider:

- If you're working with an antique chair, replacing the springs with elastic webbing can reduce its authenticity and value.
