What is Gum Tragacanth?
Gum Tragacanth is a natural gum used in leathercraft to help smooth and finish leather edges. It’s typically applied to raw leather edges before burnishing, giving them a sleek, polished look.
How does it work?
When applied to the edge, Gum Tragacanth softens the leather, making it more pliable and easier to burnish. It helps to seal the edge and provides a smooth, even finish.
How do I use it?
Apply a small amount of Gum Tragacanth to the raw leather edge using a cloth or sponge. Then, burnish the edge using a bone folder, edge burnisher, or any suitable tool. After the edge is smooth, you can proceed to paint or seal it.
Can it be used with all leather types?
Yes, it works well with most leathers, particularly veg-tan leather. However, it’s less effective on already finished or chrome-tanned leather, where burnishing is less necessary.
Does it make the leather shiny?
It doesn’t make the leather shiny on its own, but it does create a smooth, matte, and polished surface. If you want a glossy finish, you can apply edge paint or a sealant after burnishing.
How long does it take to dry?
It dries fairly quickly – usually within 10–15 minutes. However, it's best to let the leather sit for a bit before handling to ensure the surface is fully set.
Can I apply it over dyed leather?
Yes, you can apply Gum Tragacanth over dyed leather. Just make sure the dye is completely dry before using the gum to avoid smudging.
How much do I need to use?
A little goes a long way. Only a small amount is required to coat the edge before burnishing, so it should last a long time with regular use.
