What is a stitching groover used for?
A stitching groover cuts a neat groove into leather where your stitching will sit. This helps protect the thread from wear and gives a tidy, professional finish. It can also be used to create a groove for easy bending of the leather.
Do I need a stitching groover for all leather projects?
Not always. It's most useful for belts, wallets, and bags where you want your stitches to sit flush or slightly recessed. For decorative stitching or softer leathers, it’s optional.
Can I adjust the width of the groove from the edge?
Yes. If it has an adjustable guide, you can set how far the groove is from the leather's edge. This gives you consistency across your project. If you have a freehand groover you can use a ruler or template.
What’s the difference between a stitching groover and a creaser?
A groover cuts a shallow trench into the leather. A creaser only compresses the surface, making a line for decoration or guiding stitches. One cuts, the other marks.
Should I groove both sides of the leather?
Only groove the top (grain) side where the stitches show. Grooving both sides can weaken the leather and isn’t necessary for most projects.
How do I keep my groover in good condition?
Wipe clean after use, don’t force it through hard leather, and occasionally check the blade for sharpness or replace it if it dulls.
What type of leather works best with a groover?
Vegetable-tanned leather is ideal. Groovers don’t work well on very soft or stretchy leathers like garment hides, chrome tan or suede.
